IC Rolls are cast iron grades containing graphite and carbides in a tempered martensitic matrix. Softer grades contain more graphite and less carbide. The graphite content is responsible for the excellent spall and fire crack resistance.
These rolls are usually double poured. Double poured rolls combine wear resistance of the shell together with toughness of the ductile iron core.
Excellent surface finish combined with high wear and fire crack resistance makes these rolls an excellent choice for Hot Strip Mills. Without ICDP grades, presently flat rolling in the last finishing stands is not possible.
To improve the wear resistance of the rolls, strong carbide forming alloying elements is added to the shell material. As the result, the shell indefinite chill microstructure is enhanced with discrete extremely hard Niobium and Vanadium carbides. Existing properties of bruise crack and fire crack resistance are all maintained.
